Rocks lain about from digs don't hamper happiness. This ensures me that the Mason workshop will only create items coming from that stock pile, in this case marble only. However, when I want to make Marble statues only, I create a small stock pile (p) (2x2 in size), for Marble stones, then set to Give (g) to the Mason Workshop, and assign 1 wheel barrow. Mason will grab the nearest rock and use that rock to make stuff. Thanks for reading fellow earth-burrowers !X! But I presume the stone still has to be carried by dwarves so it's like moving stone to stock piles or anything else, it still takes resources to move them (i.e. I personally don't know anything about dumping. I would think a small stockpile near your workshops would be good for efficiency, but will it have to be set up to supply the workshop manually?ĭ.) When is it worth the time and dwarf-power to 'dump' rooms? Should you be concerned about 'running out' of stone? But as your fortress increases in size you can dedicate a dwarf or two to this activity. I personally avoid stone stock piles because it keeps too many dwarves busy haulng slow stone around. Does it lower the value of rooms? Does it effect dwarf happiness?Ĭ.) Is it a good idea to have a stone stockpile, and if so how large? Does it impede construction? Doesn't appear so. Is there any harm? Does it slow down movement? Doesn't appear so. Am I miss-reading this? Are these dwarves gathering stone for workshop activities?ī.) What is all this rock laying around doing? Yet, I seem to see dwarves wandering to far lower levels to grab a rock at times when there are many others that they pass. So I presume that the dwarves are grabbing those exact rocks, and not further away rocks of the same type. I was under the impression that when you selected the type of rock you wanted construction to have, that they were listed from top to bottom in order of nearest location. So a few topics:Ī.) What controls dwarf rock collection location? They leave behind rooms for me to utilize, but tons and tons of rock. Like everyone else, my fortress miners drill along all day long. The lava cools down into igneous extrusive ("fiery outside") layers, which in DF replace the sedimentary layers in some biomes near volcanoes.Want to start playing? Read this sidebar! If the magma rises all the way up to the surface and is expelled by a volcano, we call it lava. In DF, these form a layer below the metamorphic stones, but in real life they may form anywhere there are cracks for the magma to fill in. If magma escapes the heat, it may cool and harden while still underground, forming the igneous intrusive ("fiery inside") rocks. Those forces transform them into different kinds of rocks, called metamorphic.įurther down, as things get hotter still, rocks melt into magma. Those grains and particles are then glued together into new rocks ("cemented") by various processes for example, by mineral growth of substances carried by water (similar to how stalactites grow).īelow the sedimentary layer, the rocks are subjected to heat from below, and pressure, stretching etc. Below that there's a sedimentary layer of stones these are made of particles of minerals, organic detritus and other stuff, which, after tumbling around, end up settling down below ("sedimenting"). The most valuable of them all, colored diamonds, are found within faint yellow diamonds within kimberlite within gabbro layers.Ĭommon stone types: granite, gabbro In real lifeīeing modelled on basic geology, much of the way stone layers work in Dwarf Fortress also applies to our planet: At the surface of the world there's a thin covering of soil, a soft mixture of minerals (the building blocks of stones), small rocks ( sand, silt, clay etc.), liquids, living things and so on. Gems here are generally the most valuable, on average. This is the deepest and often widest level, and leads directly into the magma sea.
